William Butler Yeats

What Was Lost

I SING what was lost and dread what was won,
I walk in a battle fought over again,
My king a lost king, and lost soldiers my men;
Feet to the Rising and Setting may run,
They always beat on the same small stone.

Asterix's birthday

Asterix is 50 years old and he still has all his teeth! Heroes never get old as long as they are in our hearts. Millions of readers around the world celebrate Asterix’s birthday.
The Gauls keep on resisting Roman’s occupation. They do so by means of a magic potion, brewd by their druid, which gives the recipient supernatural strength. All Gauls drink the potion except Obelix who fell into the cauldron of magic potion when he was a little boy...
A Gaulish village keeps its identity, independence and originality. Mostly it keeps our hope and optimism that justice triumphs in the end and life is full of colours when carefree people celebrate around a big fire , singing and eating pork .
To mark the birthday, Uderzo, the artist, has created the new adventure, The Birthday of Asterix and Obelix.

New TOEFL competitor-the PTE Academic

Pearson, the publisher of The Economist magazine, has just launched a brand new English proficiency exam, which they are hoping will grow to be as popular as the TOEFL is today. The new exam is called the Pearson Test of English (PTE). There are three forms of the new exam. The one that will interest TOEFL students the most is the PTE Academic. Already over 500 universities, including top ones like Yale, have announced that they will accept PTE Academic scores from international students. In addition to the academic exam, there is also a PTE General, and a PTE for Young Learners.

The first PTE Academic will be administered in India in November 2009. Of course, since it is such a new exam, there is hardly any material to help one study for it. The TOEFL has been around for a long, long time. Even the current version, the TOEFL iBT, has been around for years now, so there are a lot of text books, sample exams, and free internet resources like this one to help one study for the it. It will take some time for this amount of material to appear for the new PTE Academic.

WORLD FOOD DAY, 16 OCTOBER 2009

Achieving Food Security in Times of Crisis" is the World Food Day 2009 theme.
At a time when the global economic crisis dominates the news, the world needs to be reminded that not everyone works in offices and factories. The crisis is stalking the small-scale farms and rural areas of the world, where 70 percent of the world's hungry live and work. With an estimated increase of 105 million hungry people in 2009, there are now 1.02 billion malnourished people in the world, meaning that almost one sixth of all humanity is suffering from hunger. Both public and private investments are needed, more specifically through targeted public investment to encourage and facilitate private investment, especially by farmers themselves.

The aims of  Environmental Education are for students to develop:

• Aim 2: knowledge and understanding of the environment and the impact of people on it;
• Aim 3: attitudes and values that reflect feelings of concern for the environment;

Aim 4: skills involved in identifying, investigating, and problem solving associated with environmental issues;

Strange cloud over Moscow

An ominous halo cloud over Moscow has been the subject of much speculation all over the internet since its appearance last week.“It’s a purely optical effect, even if a spectacular one. You can see really strange things if you watch the clouds regularly,” weather officials told Russia’s Vesti 24. “Several air fronts have passed Moscow recently, including an inflow of cold air from the Arctic, and they combined to produce such a phenomenon.”

This day in history...Mata Hari executed!

Mata Hari, the archetype of the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad at Vincennes outside of Paris.
She first came to Paris in 1905 and found fame as a performer of exotic Asian-inspired dances. She soon began touring all over Europe, telling the story of how she was born in a sacred Indian temple and taught ancient dances by a priestess who gave her the name Mata Hari, meaning "eye of the day" in Malay. In reality, Mata Hari was born in a small town in northern Holland in 1876, and her real name was Margaretha Geertruida Zelle. She acquired her superficial knowledge of Indian and Javanese dances when she lived for several years in Malaysia with her former husband, who was a Scot in the Dutch colonial army. Regardless of her authenticity, she packed dance halls and opera houses from Russia to France, mostly because her show consisted of her slowly stripping nude.

She became a famous courtesan, and with the outbreak of World War I her catalog of lovers began to include high-ranking military officers of various nationalities. In February 1917, French authorities arrested her for espionage and imprisoned her at St. Lazare Prison in Paris. In a military trial conducted in July, she was accused of revealing details of the Allies' new weapon, the tank, resulting in the deaths of thousands of soldiers. She was convicted and sentenced to death, and on October 15 she refused a blindfold and was shot to death by a firing squad at Vincennes.

There is some evidence that Mata Hari acted as a German spy, and for a time as a double agent for the French, but the Germans had written her off as an ineffective agent whose pillow talk had produced little intelligence of value. Her military trial was riddled with bias and circumstantial evidence, and it is probable that French authorities trumped her up as "the greatest woman spy of the century" as a distraction for the huge losses the French army was suffering on the western front. Her only real crimes may have been an elaborate stage fallacy and a weakness for men in uniform.

Why do we sleep?

A recent study may have an answer to one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in science - what is the purpose of sleep?
The work suggests it's actually about making animals function more efficiently in their environments.Jerry Seigel: 'It's animals that are needlessly active that will not survive, but animals that are most efficient and use their waking time to do vital functions, and are otherwise asleep that will survive.'

Sleep helps make best use of limited resources. In humans, when we're awake, our brain accounts for 20% of the energy we use when just sitting around. Sleeping also makes us less likely to get injured and less likely to be detected by predators.

A common day, the same story...

I stuck in dense traffic due to the rain this morning. Then i queued up to get some official papers, while hearing some old people complain about red tape in the public service. A common day, the same old story.
Being a part of this story I was fiddling around with my keys ,while waiting patiently in a long line. Besides, blowing a fuse is to no effect. If you want to keep afloat in a big city, just don't put too much emphasis on the harsh reality. That's the new fashion. Some people say that we re getting "hypnotized", detached and indifferent. I think that all we do is to bluff our way out of so many difficulties. We follow the drift of the current only to survive.....

Should Students Be Paid to Do Well in School?

Few things in France can provoke heated debate faster than moves to tinker with the country's vaunted public-education system, which embodies republican values that date back to the French Revolution. It's especially true when the changes involve an idea as capitalistic and nonegalitarian as paying certain students — the ones most apt to fail and drop out — to attend classes and get good grades.

This is exactly what's happening in a pilot program that started this month at three vocational high schools in disadvantaged suburbs of Paris. Accounts will be set up for two classes in each school, each containing around $3,000 apiece. If the students maintain good attendance records and reach performance targets agreed upon with their teachers, reward payments will be added to their class account. But here's the catch: the students can't go and spend the money on a new iPod or an Xbox at the end of the year. Each account, which could reach a maximum of $15,000, can only be used to finance a school-related project or endeavor, such as a class trip abroad to improve foreign-language skills, computer equipment for the classroom or driving lessons to obtain a license. Still, not a bad deal.

vocational:επαγγελματικός
nonegalitarian:που δεν ανήκει ή αναφέρεται στην ισονομία ή την ισοπολιτεία

Taller than I or Taller than me?

This is to shed light on a common grammar mistake.

The correct response is that we are looking for the subject form: "He is taller than I (am tall)."

Historic vs Historical

The english words ‘historic’ amd ‘historical’ sound entirely familiar to native greek speakers. Derived from ancient, classical greek, they are adjectives stemming from the abstract noun ‘history’, a word that entered the English language in 1390 with the meaning of "relation of incidents, story''.

However, when it comes to their use, we are all on the horns of a dilemma. Is 'historic' synonymous with 'historical'? The answer is no. Historic means "important," "momentous," or "historically significant." Historical means "relating to the past."

For example:

 Historic buildings in Athens are to be preserved.

( Historic describes something remarkable and important .)

The Sixties are now considered a historical period, just like the Roman Empire.

( Historical is related to the study of history.)
